On the Horizon – Flexible Robotic Surgery

Minimally invasive surgery or laparoscopy promises faster patient
recovery times, fewer complications, and shorter hospital stays. But
minimally invasive surgery is still not a common procedure. Surgeons
rely on cameras inserted into the patient to visualize the operating
field. Now an innovative, compact robotic system developed by Columbia
University researchers provides real-time three-dimensional images of
the operating field through a camera mounted between two snake-like
flexible arms. The ultrathin delivery system is about as wide as a
