Hi CTKers -

Just FYI about discussions we are having leading up to project week in
January. Anyone who's interested is welcome to join.

Hi all,

Thanks for the very productive meeting today. I’ve uploaded the meeting
minutes to the NAMIC week’s project page (thanks to Christian for the
inputs):

http://www.na-mic.org/Wiki/index.php/2016_Winter_Project_Week:TrackedUltrasoundStandardization

We plan to have one or two more similar meetings before the project week to
continue the discussion.

For all those who plan to attend the project week: please request an
account at the NAMIC wiki (
http://www.na-mic.org/Wiki/index.php/Special:RequestAccount). It’ll allow
you to register to the event, edit the project page, etc.

Hi all,

Thanks for the doodle poll responses. Based on those, *November 23, Monday,
9am EST* (probably 3pm Norway time) is the most suitable.

You should be able to join the meeting through the google hangout link on
this page:

https://plus.google.com/events/ceo6eum5ja3rhjgjed29eiu67b8?authkey=COHXmfavj620Fg

This will be an informal meeting to get to know each other and define
priorities for the next couple of months, in preparation for the project
week in January.

Hi all,

Christian, thanks for the great summary of topics, these would all serve as
good basis of collaboration and convergence in IGT software.

We’ve recently had a discussion at Montreal Neurological Institute (Louis D
Collins’ group: Simon Drouin, Ian Gerard, Marta Kersten, et al.), they are
also very interested in integrating/migrating their software to
3DSlicer-SlicerIGT-Plus, share algorithms, etc, and they, too, will come to
the project week to Boston in January.

I would suggest to have a teleconference to introduce ourselves to each
other and discuss what topics we should focus on first. Christian, Simon
(and everyone else interested in this Project week planning meeting),
please mark your availability in this doodle poll:

Thanks,

Andras

Hi Andras, Gabor, all,

Your suggesion regarding EU Twinning Programme came at the perfect time for
me - I was just about to send you, Andras, an email regarding the Winter
Project Week in January. We have discussed a bit in an email thread
originating in the OpenIGTLink list some weeks ago, I’ll continue from
there.

Our group will be present in Boston with 1-2 software people, so it would
be great to start the work there, and then continue in Heidelberg and
beyond. We would like to work in integration of CustusX+PLUS, and on IGT
standardization in general. I hope both of these topics are of interest to
you. In Boston we will focus the work on CustusX+PLUS, but we can also
discuss standardization (also including the Slicer people and others) and
then focus more on this in Heidelberg, as I imagine this topic will need
time to mature.

Below is a quick first draft of my thoughts. Andras, please iterate and/or
suggest topics.

*Proposal for cooperation projects PerkLab/PLUS group, SINTEF/CustusX
group, (+ others).*

*Enhance connection of CustusX client to PLUS server:*
Background: CustusX has used PLUS to connect to an Ultrasonix scanner with
an attached tracking device from Ascension (Sonix GPS), as part of the EU
RASimAs project. CustusX also has tracking support from the IGSTK toolkit,
and own direct support for a number of video/US devices. We would like to
add PLUS to this family, poosibly replacing some of our older components.

Topics:

• Tracking of BrainLab devices.

• Connection to BK medical scanners.

• Enhance transfer of US probe metadata. Might include extending the
OpenIGTLink standard.

• Use of PLUS US reconstruction algorithms in CustusX as an alternative to
CX internal algorithms, and enable comparison of algorithms.

*Standardization of IGT software.*
Background:

• Emails, major players converge towards IGTLink. Several groups are using
PLUS and/or Slicer, but also open-sourcing their own software and want to
be compatible with each other.

• Data should be usable by several systems in order to ease comparison in
e.g. studies.

• Our group need to communicate models and volumes with Slicer, and would
like to use PLUS.

There are several areas where standardization would be beneficial:

• messaging between applications.

• file formats.

• algorithms/shared libraries.

It is important to build as much as possible on existing material and de
facto standards.

Topics:

• Messaging: OpenIGTLink is the de facto standard for messaging. Is the
standard complete? What do we need? US-probe data, polydata colors, volume
transfer functions /LUTs.

• File Formats: Models, Volumes, Video streams, US metadata, scenegraph.
Some of these objects are already somewhat standardized, but not all.

• Algorithms: A library of IGT algorithms would be welcome. It might be
included into an existing library (VTK, CTK, …) or emerge as a new one.

Best Regards
