The problem with a restricted-access repository is we would probably  
have the same issues we have now: you need to ask for access, which  
would not be granted to you until you are "well-known" and/or you've  
got some really interesting contribution. Not a big improvement, IMHO.

I'd like to propose a huge change: let's have a SourceForge-like site  
(what about CMakeForge at http://cmakeforge.cmake.org ? ) where people  
can start their own projects for finders or whatever and upload and  
update when they feel like it. A big "This is not supported by  
Kitware" in every download page would make it clear it's not official.  
This way we would have a single site, with easy access (as in "I can  
create a project for my finders whenever I want to"), search  
capabilities and a ratings system just like SourceForge and its clones  
(Savannah, RubyForge, etc) have: most active projects, most downloaded  
projects, etc.
