May 2008: Short-term Medical Imaging GUI Project

Description

A short-term contractor experienced developing in C++ is needed to implement a GUI front-end to control functional MRI experiments in real-time. Responsibilities will be to implement a robust, high-quality user interface to allow researchers to interact with an image analysis back-end also written in C++. This is a well-defined project with a strict time-line and stringent quality requirements so a good working knowledge of the APIs is required.

The ideal candidate will have prior experience with cross-platform C++ GUI libraries, along with medical image display and interaction using the VTK API. Familiarity with Open Inventor is a plus.

Interested candidates can send a description of experience and applicable skills to atighe@mit.edu and ohinds@mit.edu.

January 2008 to Dec. 2010: Virtual Reality in Computational Biology - Postdoctoral position at IBPC, Paris, France

Postdoc position FlowVR Nano: a virtual laboratory

Project description (see also http://www.shaman.ibpc.fr/fvnano_postdoc.pdf)
We are seeking a highly motivated research programmer or a postdoctoral fellow to develop software tools for interactive high performance simulations coupling virtual reality, scientific visualization and parallel simulation through a full cooperation with on-going projects. The main application at the centre of this project targets handling and exploring simulations of biological or physical complex objects at the nanoscopic scale, using a virtual reality platform with haptic feedback. The successful candidate will join our group developing state-of-the-art computer simulation methods. This position is a unique training opportunity in a multi-disciplinary environment in collaboration with three other leading teams in France who are experts on complementary topics.
Qualification and experience
The candidate should have a PhD in visualisation, computer graphics, virtual reality or a related field. Skills in haptics would be appreciated. Specific experience with scientific computing in general and computational biology in particular is not required, but would represent an important advantage over other candidates. Strong skill in computer programming (in particular Objective-C, Cocoa), VTK or virtual reality and a good background in computer science is also an important prerequisite. Ability to work effectively in a team-based environment and leadership qualities are essential. Funding is available immediately.
About the host institute
The "Institut de Biologie Physico-Chimique" was created in 1930 by the Foundation Edmond de Rothschild. It is associated with the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique), a leading international scientific institution offering an exceptional environment to scientists early in their career.

Interested candidates should send a CV and a letter of motivation as PDF document to baaden@ibpc.fr. Please include the names of three referees.

When? 3 years starting Jan 2008
Where? Laboratoire de Biochimie Theorique, Paris, France
Salary: 2500 Euro/month

August 2007 to Sept. 2008: graduate/postgraduate/staff position at Caletch & Harvard Medical School

The Caltech Center of Excellence in Genomic Science (CEGS) is a newly funded initiative that’s driven to digitize life. Our goal is to understand embryonic development as the execution of a program in our genome. We seek to upload embryonic development into a virtual life form called the Digital Fish through the use of genetics, molecular imaging, and information technology. Our approach called “in toto imaging” is to use confocal/2-photon imaging to image all the cells in developing transgenic zebrafish embryos and special software we are developing called GoFigure to extract complete cell lineages and gene expression patterns.

We are looking for people with strong experience in C++ programming and VTK/ITK to join our GoFigure development team. There are a number of significant image analysis problems we are addressing including: segmenting cells in space, across time, and across cell division; quantitating protein expression patterns and subcellular localization; developing a standard, cell-based, 4-d atlas of embryonic development; and registering molecular data from thousands of different embryos onto this atlas.

There are opportunities at the graduate, post-doc, and staff levels. The successful applicant would join our team at Caltech in Pasadena/LA soon and then move with us to my new lab in the Department of Systems Biology at Harvard Medical School in Boston in summer 2008. To apply, please send a cover letter, CV, and letters of reference to me by email (megason@caltech.edu).

For more information please see below: www.digitalfish.org <http://www.digitalfish.org/> or talk to Alexandre Gouaillard or myself at the upcoming NAMIC meeting in Boston (june 2007). http://www.na-mic.org/Wiki/index.php/NA-MIC_NCBC_Collaboration:3D%2Bt_Cells_Lineage:GoFigure
