Applying image guidance to an electronically controlled surgical drill can prevent damage to patient’s anatomy during resection. A system is presented that disables the drill when it nears critical patient anatomy based on a segmented preoperative CT scan. The system’s application software displays CT images of anatomy to be resected and the current position of the drill tip. The application (a) registers physical space to CT space, (b) tracks the drill, and (c) disables the drill automatically. Two tests were performed to determine the feasibility of the system. We conclude that the system shows promise and further testing should be conducted.
