I'm already using the vtkOrientationMarkWidget+vtkAxesActor to
indicate the orientation in the lower left corner of my window.
Since this is scaled based on it's viewport, I couldn't see how to
make it work in model coordinates and to fix the size. Maybe I'm
missing something obvious?<br>

does vtkOrientationMarkWidget do what you want? You can add
vtkAxesActor or vtkAnnotatedCubeActor to the widget for its representation.

It doesn't have to be axes (although that would be nice).
The trick is to get it to be a fixed size regardless of the camera zoom and
to make it visible even if "hidden" inside of another actor.
