I have it and I think it is what you are looking for.    It basically walks you through the process of using VTK to  build visualization pipelines of various sorts.
The book relies heavily on the example codes that accompany the VTK distribution so you will have code to look at and play with.    I think the book could have included some more elaborate examples, but it is targeted toward a less experienced audience.    You will eventually have questions that you will have to figure out on your own.... the beauty is that there almost always IS an answer.
