I solved my own problem. I just had to set the camera used for the sort as
the active camera for my renderer. It is pretty sad when I had the answer
to my question as one of my questions of how to solve the problem. I guess
I just asked a little too soon. Sorry to bother everybody with a question I
could answer for myself.
