[vtkusers] Java vtkCanvas/vtkPanel problem

Hi, I'm just getting started with vtk.  I'm using Java in Linux/Xwindows.

I've complied most of the Java demos.  All of the demos that use a
vtkRenderWindow work flawlessly.

However, in all of the demos that use a vtkCanvas or vtkPanel (e.g.
/VTK/Wrapping/Java/SimpleVTK.java), the rendering is choppy and the
background flashes through.

Anyone know what might be going on?
