[vtkusers] Compiling VTK with optimization flags

Hi, 

has anybody tried (and succeeded) compiling VTK with optimization flags ? 

I am working on a SUN ultra 10 workstation running solaris 7. By default,
configure sets  USER_CFLAGS   = -g. I tried supplying -fast -xO4 instead,
but the compilation failed.

Is it possible to add non-debug optimization flags ? If yes, up to what
optimization level can I go ?
