java classpath error

While compiling vtk31 on solaris.It is giving errors while tring to compile 
the java classes.Inspite of correctly giving the class paths.

I changed

JAVA_CLASS_HOME= /p1/vtk/vtk31/java -classpath /p1/vtk/vtk31/java


I also tried doing

setenv CLASSPATH /p1/vtk/vtk31/java

neither of them works for me.

Can some one please help.
