I had similar problems, but setting the vritual memory to 512 MB (!)
solved the problem. 256 MB 0f virtual memory wasn't enough.

Go to: Settings => Control Panel => System => Performance Tab => Virtual Memory
Select "Let me specify my own virtual memory settings"
Use 512 for the Minimum and Maximum. Don't let Micro$oft scare
you with their warning. My system (with 64 MB RAM) runs much smoother
when Windows in NOT managing the virtual memory.

A few weeks ago I send in a short report on compiling VTK 2.4
under Win 98 / MSVC 5. I'm sending you my project files privately.

I again would like to offer to upload the whole MSVC 5 project
to an FTP somewhere so that new users with this setup have an
easy start. It's about 4 MB ziped. Just tell me where to put it...
