It's always been there, but is not documented. It's just a hack :-)

What you need is the Animation menu, set animation between two identical
keyframes, use the "Save animation as a movie or images" and type in the
resolution you want. You can make your images any resolution you wish.

The source code is vtkSMAnimationSceneProxy.cxx: Open it up and you will
understand the logic of it.
