[Paraview] Operating System & 64 bits

I am running paraview (pvserver) using MPI on 6 machines (a small rendering 
or vis cluster) and piping it back to a single display using pvclient.  Is 
there a recommended operating system for such a configuration or should all 
perform about the same (currently we are running Suse 10.0)?

Also would I see a substanual performance increase with a 64bit OS with 
64bit cpu as opposed to a 32 bit OS on a 32bit with the same clock speed as 
64bit cpu?
