Hi Alan (and Joachim),

Thanks for the various tips: the memory inspector told me that 
v4.1.0/ubuntu was using 24.78GiB (system total) vs 8.41GiB (paraview) 
with immediate mode enabled. Without it, as before, it just crashes. The 
Windows pc I referred to behaved similarly and reported 12.11GiB (total) 
vs 8.8GiB (paraview) with immediate mode enabled.

Curiously though, the nightly build of paraview v4.1.0-108/ubuntu is not 
so sensitive to the use of immediate mode rendering, and loads the model 
regardless [ reporting 23.81GiB (system total) vs 7.10GiB (paraview) ] 
without immediate mode. Presumably then, some kind of memory efficiency 
has been found for the later version, particularly with regard to 
graphics buffers?
