Make sense to keep the shared libs in one place so as not to need more library paths in your environment. However,  a lot of other programs install things in a sub directory, and don't have a problem with the run-time linking, not sure how they do it. The directory approach has always made things easier for removal, but I only care enough about the issue just to make this comment.

Just wanted to note that some are libitk*4.0.a and some are libITK*4.0.a, so there is a mix of case there. Was this on purpose?
