[CMake] CMake list and Single square brackets

I think the difference is more likely to be caused by the different list
construction method (set() vs list(APPEND ...)) than by the single
square bracket. What happens if you use set() for that case instead?

The first thing I would look at in this scenario is what does the output
of message("${_list}") look like for the third case?
