We can not include in IGSTK a method that is covered by a Patent, unless the Patent holder provides a public license similar to the BSD-like license of IGSTK, allowing anybody to make use of the method.
Note, that even if you plan to use this method as part of academic research, you are subject to the restriction that the Patent holder imposes on the method.
You may find interesting the ruling from a Federal Court on the case Madey vs. Duke Univeristy:

The only exception that the court allowed, was for:
"amusement, to satisfy idle curiosity, or for strictly philosophical inquiry."
